The period around the turn of the millennium was in many ways similar to what is now known as the "belle époque" from the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries. After the fall of Communism and the collapse of the Sovietic bloc, suddenly it seemed that the world finally got sound and reasonable and that at least Europe had managed to solve the security risks and eliminate the threat of massive armed conflicts. With a little exaggeration, it can be said that Europe breathed the free air and began to dance the waltz again. This spirited feeling did not last for long...
