Uherský Brod – The traditional superb reputation of the Czech armament industry is today maintained by only a few companies. The cannons produced by Skoda Plzen, the tanks carrying the Praga trade-mark and the machine guns developed by Zbrojovka Brno are now all items of the past. A different fate, however, awaited the factory that had, on the 1st February 1937, initiated the production of air guns in Uherský Brod. This enterprise, which in the course of its history has produced many famous rifles and pistols, is now called Česká zbrojovka and it belongs amongst the largest producers of small arms in the world, with annual sales that approach two billion Czech crowns.
In the current Česká zbrojovka portfolio can be found air rifles, hunting rifles, handguns and military weapons. Last year the arms factory from Uherský Brod commenced supplying a new CZ 805 Bren assault rifle to the Czech Army, thereby replacing an earlier product, the outdated Model 58 submachine gun. The inauguration of the factory, however, which was built in the late 1930’s on a greenfield site in a region that, until then, had been famous for its wine rather than for mechanical engineering, was also connected with meeting the needs of the then Czechoslovak Army .
